it's the world tour 2024!
okay, it's only two countries. but I'm going to the other one twice!
This week and last, things have been ramping up in a big way over here, in ways they haven’t in some time. From starting a new project at DC unlike any of the others I’ve done so far, to setting the scaffolding up on my first creator-owned work in over five years…I’m busy.
But I’m about to be busy in one of my favorite ways - by being on the road and coming to see some of you.
That’s right, I’ve got a few appearances coming up! ROLL THE SLIDE SHOW:
LOS ANGELES - FCBD @ THINGS FROM ANOTHER WORLD
Blake and I are signing on Saturday, May 4th at Things From Another World at Universal Citywalk! The Citywalk’s a fun place to spend the day, so if your plans are to meet Nick, Rosie, or Babs, and wait around for us, there’s lots to do. We’ll have some cool and rare variants for sale, and the shop will have trade paperbacks of our work.
PORTSMOUTH COMIC CON, PORTSMOUTH U.K.
NEXT WEEK: Our first trip to the U.K!
That’s right, we’ll be in Portsmouth, England at Portsmouth Comic Con, May 11-12! So excited to be invited to this beautiful seaside city for a weekend of comics discussion and love for the medium. Blake and I are headed over early next week to spend a few nights in London before the convention - any London or Portsmouth area readers have any favorite spots I should see? Anything I absolutely have to eat?
PHOENIX FAN FUSION - PHOENIX, AZ
WOW are you tired of looking at that promo photo of me? I SURE AM time to find a new one! I’ll be in Phoenix, AZ for the first time from May 24-26, so if that’s your area, I’m looking forward to seeing you! Again - any good places to eat or sights to see that are near the Phoenix Convention Center, leave them in the comments below.
BLACK CAT COMICS 20th ANNIVERSARY, SALT LAKE CITY, UT
June 22nd I’ll be in Salt Lake City to celebrate with one of my favorite comic shops, Black Cat Comics. Come by and party - PHENOMENOCITY artist Phillip Sevy will be there as well, so please come by if you’re in the area.
I’ve got a few more summer appearances that I’m still working out - like returning to my beloved Dragoncon in Atlanta, GA and an appearance at one of my favorite local cons ever in my dear West Hollywood during Pride month, but one more recent announcement is —
THOUGHT BUBBLE FESTIVAL - HARROGATE, ENGLAND
In November I’m going BACK ACROSS THE POND for my very first Thought Bubble!
Thought Bubble is a legendary comics and art festival, and I’m so honored to be a part of it. Four years or so of writing Captain Britain and I finally get to go to the U.K.! Twice! Let me know if I’ll see you there.
A few bullet points of things I’ve been really enjoying lately, that you might like too:
I’m only one episode into The Sympathizer on MAX, (she’s always HBO to me…) but it’s completely blown me away. Directed by the incredible (and oft extolled on this ‘stack) Park Chan-Wook, I’m completely sucked into this tense spy tale, and it’s so shamefully rare to get stories of the Vietnam War from the perspective of the people who were born there. Also excellent - the show is mostly in Vietnamese, with Vietnamese actors. And the mid-century styling is a 10/10.
I’ve been drawing an awful lot. I’ve got most of a post written up to share my thoughts on taking on a new hobby and humbling yourself with it, and you’ll see some of my attempts. If you’re someone who would like to spend a little more time drawing, but needs a bit of reference, check out line-of-action.com. They’ve got everything from a diverse set of human and animal models to scenery and backgrounds, and you can even set yourself up a timed little class if you’d like to do speed figure drawing. (Me, I’m not there yet. But I’m here for your journey.)
As a shameless fan of the wild world of YouTube, I love to reference a new favorite when I can. I’m less into the…Mister Beasts of the world and more into video essayists. If you don’t know Intelexual Media, check her out. I may have even referenced her before, but she’s smart, funny, and her research is SOLID. This video, on the history of 1990s food, took me BACK.
Tomorrow night I’ll be hitting up Reparations Club in L.A. to see one of my favorite pals and cartoonists, Bianca Xunise release their debut graphic novel, Punk Rock Karaoke.
Pick up your own copy or share it with your favorite freak, punk, or goth because my favorite thing about Bianca’s comics are how they remind me of being a weirdo kid myself.
I have a few more things I wanna catch y’all up on, but for now: some release dates! Don’t forget to let your local comic shop know you want a copy, pre-orders help us all thrive!
