Congrats, Tini! I haven't bought a lot of DC in awhile, but I think I'll have to add this to my list. I can't wait to see your take on Selina.

I'm a new subscriber and just catching up on your newsletters (just learned about yours', Leah's and Vita's substacks tonight after someone linked to Vita's in the Cerebro Discord), and I read what you said in the last one about some people being really awful online to X-Writers. I know one person isn't a lot, but I do just want to say that I've been reading Excalibur since day 1 and, before X of Swords, I already really enjoyed it, but, after X of Swords, it's been consistently amazing. I teared up at Brian protecting his family this past issue (I've read the old Captain Britain and Excalibur stuff too, so to see this kind of real culmination of his decades-long arc was incredible), and I can't wait to see what's coming next from you. I am excited for where Excalibur seems to be heading, and excited to see where you land after X Lives/X Deaths, whether it be still on Excalibur or elsewhere in the X-Office, or even elsewhere on comics (I know you can't comment on this, just excited to see whatever happens!). I really loved X-Corp and LOVED X of Swords as well, but I think I've already rambled long enough. Thanks for all of your hard work, from the bottom of my heart.

Hey, thank you so much! This is such a wonderfully kind message to get, I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me you're enjoying the X-books. We have a lot of exciting stuff planned over there, so I'm glad you're on board.

And thanks for being here, too. <3 Lots to come.

Hello, I am an avid and long time Catwoman reader. I wish I could say I was excited for this new run but as soon as I read "Selina got bored of Alleytown" on DC Connect I have the feeling I won't be enjoying it as much as I should. It feels so off, especially after Ram V gave us the best character arc for Catwoman, making her a full-fledged tridimensional character, with actual depth and character progression... I am very concerned that all of this will soon be gone with the new writing team... I wish I could say "I hope to be wrong" but reading "Selina got bored of Alleytown" just proves my doubts right... because she literally almost died for Alleytown (which, by the way, according to Brubaker run, it's just a part of the East End, already inside Gotham, so she never left Gotham in the first place). I'm sorry if I sounded harsh but Catwoman is too important for me and as a buyer I think I can let my (and many more Catwoman fans') voice be heard.

Okay. This is apparently from solicit text. I did not write that and in fact do not always see these before they go to press. I agree with you.

Please consider these things when you comment like this. You are making a lot of assumptions.

Thank you for replying with good news. I'm sorry for having made these assumption but it was all we had about the future of Catwoman and we fans have been very, very concerned. I don't think we know who writes these solicitations, but I hope this message reaches them. Please, have a nice day.

I'm quite confused...where are folks reading this?

Selina wouldn’t just GET BORED of Alleytown! I was already doubting your run from the start but now it’s clear to me that you’re just gonna ignore everything Ram V had built for her. I ain’t buying this.

Hello, I'm a long time Catwoman fan and I probably read every Catwoman book ever released and this post is worrying me.

It sounds to me like the new arc is going to be more centered on Selina "being sexy" rather than continuing the evolution of her character Ram V has done so much to enstablish. This comes from someone who enjoys Selina's heists the most (the 1993 run is my favorite) but she grew up and evolved since then. There's so much more that can be explored other than simply "how cool" or "how hot" she is, especially after Ram V has beautifully outlined her fragility and weak points going under the surface of just a "sexy thief".

I also hope her cuban origins will be explored one day along with her bisexuality.

Hello and welcome.

As a person who has spent 35 years as a woman, all I can say is that I find it kind of sad and troubling when I get comments like these. It only ever happens when I write female characters, I find: the second I mention sexuality, people who truly love the character become very concerned that she will lose her rich inner life and delicate heart and soul.

All I can say to that is that I encourage you to look at why you feel that way. Selina isn't on a stripper pole because sex sells comic books, I'll tell you that much. A woman on a stripper pole is a woman with a rich inner life. A woman on a stripper pole has beautiful fragility. A woman on a stripper pole has weak points.

Women on stripper poles - and crucially, any and all strippers - are real, complex, interesting, and can be delicate, loveable, and dangerous, and the fact that people don't always think about that...well, Selina would have a lot to say about that, I think. I sure do.

Hope you give it a try. Cheers.

I am a woman too and I have nothing against sex workers and it is true that they are real people with feelings but Catwoman has had a rough history having been exploited for her sexuality ever since being introduced in comic books.

She was even censored for ten years because she was considered too risqué in a time where the only "hot" thing she did was dress cute and talk back to men. Writers have been experimenting on her with sexuality for ages to the point that "being sexy" is the main trait that characterizes her in pop culture and with Ram V I thought we finally had found a writer who managed to understand her depth and growth without focusing on her sexualization.

I will surely give it a try but I am tired of seeing my favorite character being treated just like a sex object. I hope this won't be the case.

Expand full comment

Of course, sex workers are real people. The person below didn't even mention them. You can't be mad at people for being concerned for Selina's characterization when your run is ONLY being marketed as a femme fatale, lustful, sexy book with no elaboration on the nuance, complexity something like Brubaker & more recently Ram V's stories have. Selina being sexy is a given. We just want to see our favorite character treated with care.

Oh, please don't think I'm angry, I'm not. I simply wanted a chance to reply.

The truth is we probably agree about Selina in many ways and disagree in others - that's what being comic fans is all about - and all I can say is thanks for being a Catwoman fan. I can't promise any fan they'll like something. That's not my style.

But I can say that I believe Selina is the defender of the exploited and exploiting her is not what I'm interested in doing, even a little.
