Hello, Scorpio Room. It’s a beautiful Friday here in Los Angeles, and it was a lovely week.
Last Thursday I made my first BOOKBUILDING post, sharing my thoughts on developing factions within a story. More on that soon - you’ll be learning more about each faction as the weeks go on and we work on Chapter Three.
On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have our first exclusive cover reveal from DC, with those amazing Worlds Without a Justice League: Wonder Woman covers.
Finally, on Wednesday, we launched chapter two of PHENOMENOCITY for our paid supporters. It’s because of you all that we’ve been able to keep making pages, and we’re incredibly grateful.
But not to fear - our friends at the free tier will get to read chapter two for free in two weeks, so mark your calendars for June 22nd.
This week I finally am feeling the advent of summer. The smell of sunscreen is in the air, I’ve purchased violet syrup and gin for sleepy sunset cocktails, and my bathing suit remains perpetually damp on the back of the bathroom door. It feels nice to get sun on my skin, to get exercise in the pool, and to try to remember to relax a little bit.
At the beginning of the year, I did something I don’t usually do and wrote down some business/career goals. Just some things I wanted to make sure I made time for this year amidst the grind of getting pages out the door. When I realized it was June, and that half of the year had gone by, I took a look at that list and was thrilled at how much I’d accomplished. Several of those goals I got to accomplish here, with you all - launching this space, and a new creator owned book were some of those goals. I’m happy to have this place and happy to be here. If you’ve never written down your goals, maybe try it this June. It feels nice.
Okay enough mushy stuff.
For the Phillip Sevy fans, KEPLER was announced this week!
Dark Horse Books is proud to present the new sci-fi thriller Kepler. The hardcover graphic novel is co-written by actor and author David Duchovny (X-Files, The Reservoir) and comics veteran Phillip Sevy (Tomb Raider, Triage), with illustration, letters, and colors by Sevy.
A race against space and extinction!
When the Benadem, benevolent space gods, return to KEPLER, a planet where homo sapiens went extinct and other hominid species thrived, their arrival threatens to plunge the world into chaos. West, a 16-year-old Neanderthal girl, is thrust into the conflict and is the only hope to prevent extinction. Her efforts, unique because of her mixed hominid heritage, not only change her life, but also reveal the merciless ambition and identity of the gods themselves.
In the tradition of Planet of the Apes, Kepler is an allegorical thriller of environmental disaster, colonialism, religion, history, and adolescence told through the eyes of a lonely outsider.
Phil is an incredible writer as well as an artist, so not only did he draw this book, he also co-wrote it alongside bright young writer David Duchovny, a newbie to comics, but you might remember his other work.
It’s out in comic shops November 16, 2022, and I can’t wait. Pop by your shop and pre-order this book from two superstars.
Chip “Three Batmen” Zdarsky is taking time away from his busy Joker-punching schedule to bring his really incredible book PUBLIC DOMAIN to comic shops via IMAGE COMICS.
It’s everything I really love about Chip’s work - including his art and lettering, which is one of my favorite things about projects like this, where he’s the sole creative force on the team. It’s an incredibly timely story that leans into the awkward parts, which is why I always call him Chip “Awkward Leaner” Zdarsky.
LOOK AT ALL THIS FUCKING SINCERITY I HAVE FOR HIS WORK
Super excited that the DIE RPG Kickstarter passed all of its stretch goals, including the one that brings me onboard to write about spooky ooky monsters. I got to turn in my first pass at these this week, and it was some of the most fun I’ve had “at work” in a minute. Despite being a long time RPG player, and being married to one of my favorite RPG writers, I’ve never actually written for any tabletop roleplaying games, and I loved doing it.
I realize I’m always posting about this place on Instagram, but not the other way around. If you use Instagram, you can follow me there, it’s literally the only social media I use.
And with that, it’s time to finish a few more things and clock out for the weekend.
Stay weird, talk soon.
