Emerald City Comic-Con 2024, you were too much fun.
There are a lot of reasons that ECCC remains one of my favorites, year after year, but the biggest is the people. Seattle fans are great, and the con attracts a bunch of my favorite creators and friends.
At the beginning of 2024, I set myself a few silly goals that I was going to move toward attempting. Things I’d always wanted to do, journeys that needed but a single step to begin.
First - Take the qualifier test to be a contestant on Jeopardy. I’ve been watching and playing Jeopardy games for years and I’m pretty good at it. I know everyone thinks that, but I’m quite certain. Or I’m wrong, and that’s fine, but I have to try. So I did, I took the test, and I haven’t heard back from them yet.
Second - I wanted to DJ. Extremely annoying of me, I know. But this list was made from a place of passions, and I’ve always wanted to learn to DJ. Either you get why picking the music is important, or you don’t, and that’s okay. If that is the case, please, listen and dance while I pick. I had no real game plan to manifest this goal, other than watching people’s sets on YouTube and googling BPM and software and stuff.
Then Kieron Gillen threw one of his famous dance parties (celebratory for his and Caspar Wijngaard’s new book, The Power Fantasy) and invited me and the amazing Jazzlyn Stone to take a turn in the DJ booth alongside him. Jazzlyn and Kieron taught me everything I needed to know and nothing I didn’t - it was only near the end of my set I was shown the ‘airhorn’ button, and only on the agreement that I wouldn’t use it.
It was a great night, and a great example of why surrounding yourself with cool, creative people is the best way to stretch your brain and find new ways to be creative.
As for the rest of the weekend? A blur of joy. Too much to talk about, so have some pics:
Some incredible cosplayers - identify yourself if that’s you!
Update - I can finally ship you Yearly and Founders your packages - as I’ve finally got a proper P.O. Box open to use as a return address. Those are going out this week, thank you for your incredible patience - as mentioned, there are lots of extras in there for everyone.
That being said, I have a P.O. Box now! If you have a book, art, a comic, something you’ve made that you’d like me to have a copy of, mailing it to me there is probably the safest and most certain way to do that. I have concerns about what I might get in the mail if I just put the address up, but leave a comment and I’ll reply to you in some form with the PO Box address.
That’s it for me this week - don’t forget to order at your comic shop, the new arc of HARLEY QUINN with AMAZING guest artist Natacha Bustos starts on 4/23 with HARLEY QUINN #38!
Stay weird, talk soon,
