Now that I'm back from DragonCon, I'm in deadline city for just a few weeks before New York Comic Con kicks off…whew. I love traveling but it does take it out of me. DragonCon was an amazing time, however. One of the best parts was sitting next to my pal and first time DragonCon attendee Sam Maggs all weekend and watching her fall in love with what a weird and unique con it is. I’ve been going to DragonCon for over fifteen years, so watching people come for their first time and get into the very unique vibe made me fall in love all over again.

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying, I think you might enjoy it too:
OUT AND ABOUT IN L.A: Been enjoying the outdoors again. We went to Garden of the Gods in Chatsworth, CA for a rock climb yesterday that was just totally breathtaking. There’s something satisfyingly primal in the satisfaction of seeing a tall rock from the ground, saying ‘I want to go up there,’ and then getting up there. That’s gotta be good for your mental health, right? What therapy can’t fix, climbing big rocks can fix. Bringing a snack to eat atop the big rock is also very good.
READING: Let’s practice radical honesty and say that between traveling and deadlines, I haven’t done much reading. Check in next time.
(If you were really waiting for a book rec from me this week leave a request in the comments as to what you feel like reading and I’ll give you a personalized book recommendation.)
WATCHING: We have been absolutely loving the Amazon Prime reboot of Takeshi’s Castle. I never watched the original, but the reboot is self-aware of its own silliness in a way that makes it riotously funny. Everyone is still giving it their all, but the judges/commentators never fail to point out the absolute stupidity of it all. As someone who LARPed for a lot of her formative years—taking a moment to acknowledge the stupidity is truly key. Plus, episodes 3 and 4 feature Naomi Watanabe as their guest, who is hilarious.
MAKES ME THINK: I finally watched Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave. I cannot believe I haven’t watched his films sooner. The Handmaiden was a period piece that I want on the shelf beside Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite when it comes to Intense Sapphic Psychological Period Pieces and Decision to Leave was probably the best example I’ve ever seen of what I’d call a modern Hitchcock film. I love a film that simultaneously blows my mind with what’s possible with movies while at the same time inspiring me to tackle a screenplay myself, someday.
ARTIST I’M DIGGING: Artist and makeup influencer Meicrosoft blows my mind with her sense of aesthetic. More than just someone who does beauty looks or special effects, Mei “like the month” views her face as a canvas upon which she is always recreating more and more stunning effects. Even if you’ve never worn a stitch of makeup in your life, you’ll gasp at what she can do with her chosen medium.
That was fun, let’s do it again next week?
