I recovered from COVID just in time to turn 38 in a manner as pious and chaste as I am - partying at a goth club in a rubber nun outfit.
Happy Scorpio Season, Scorpio Room! I’m one of those certifiable weirdoes born during All Hallows Week so October is really special to me. This year, October has been a riot from start to finish - NYCC, COVID, got better just in time for my birthday, Universal Studios, and Halloween! Only…I also have deadlines to write in that time. You know….work.
Good thing I love writing, because the last two months of my year are gonna be head down working. I’ve got some big comic arcs to plan and write, some recently-approved special projects that are gonna blow your minds, and…some more prose. I’ve been leaning on my novel writing pals (guys like my friend
, so not just novel writers but AWARD WINNING ONES) to help me with advice, warnings, and friendly motivational kicks in the ass. I’m very grateful.PS - If you work at a comic or book shop, why not subscribe your shop email to The Scorpio Room below? Even at the free tier, you’ll get weekly-ish updates about what I’ve got coming out to make your ordering life a little easier. Always here to help my pals in the infantry (comics retail).

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying, I think you might enjoy it too:
The Mystic Museum is an L.A. goth staple, but when Buffy The Last Vampire Writer and Bestie of Mine Casey Gilly came into town, we decided to swing by their seasonal offering, the Evil Dead experience. Evil Dead isn’t my favorite of the big horror franchises, but it’s a CLASSIC, and they had all sorts of fun photo ops and real props. Seeing Sam Raimi’s shooting scripts was a trip. (Where’s my Darkman photo ops?!)
Last night we checked out When Evil Lurks, an Argentinian horror film from this year that’s been getting a lot of buzz. Definitely well-deserved, but it goes hard. If you’re squeamish I’d work up to this one, or at least check your preferred movie-screening site to see if it’s for you. I, as a soulless freak who likes heavy subjects and weird gore so long as it’s not lurid, loved it. It’s on SHUDDER and probably a few other places.
If you’re not into being scared, or you’re just a fan of spooky board games, we’re having a blast with MYSTERIUM, a funny little haunted house game with the base mechanic of CLUE (solve a murder, who-what-where) and the ‘guessing your friend’s intent’ mechanic of games like Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity. One player plays the Ghost and tries to communicate the details of a murder with the rest of the table (the Psychics) using a set of frustratingly vague Vision Cards. The Psychics then need to study the cards to figure out what the hell the Ghost is trying to tell them, and in our case, a lot of hilarity ensued from the resultant misunderstandings. House rules encouraged on this one: we determined early on that Ghost players can only communicate via knocking on the table or flickering the lights.
Hey, Happy Halloween, all. It’s my favorite holiday, and I’m happy to share it with you. I hope you get to enjoy one of the perks of the night - free candy, cute babies and dogs in costumes, scary movies or Treehouse of Horror - or just the thinning of the veil and the chance to connect with those from days past. Pleasant hauntings. 🎃👻
Stay weird, talk soon -
