on wednesdays we talk comics
that is kind of a 'bad idea' for a newsletter title, i think. working on it
I hope you all enjoyed Monday’s teaser. Did you see it? The mysterious one that indicated something on its way from me and artist Phillip Sevy? Eyes to the sky. More transmissions incoming soon.
This week I’ve had my head down, scripting a bunch of pages. Last week was meetings-meetings-meetings. Zoomed with the X-writers in our very much not-Quiet Council, and then some time spent with my pals in Gotham City, as you may have heard from the newsletter of Chip Zdarsky. the writer of an upcoming book about Catwoman’s ex-fiancé.
I can’t say enough good things about working with Chip. I try, because it REALLY is good to work with him, but it isn’t enough. Nothing’s ever enough for him. I’m sick of it.
I never feel more beautiful than when I’m yelling on a Zoom call :)
CATWOMAN #42 OUT NEXT WEEK!
KNIGHTS OF X #2 BUMPED TO 6/1
Continued bummer news on comics delays. There’s now a five week wait between Knights of X #1 (4/27) and Knights of X #2 (6/1). Currently it looks like we’ll be back on track by #3, but I don’t want to jinx it by giving you guys a date that might indeed move.
As a rule, I don’t judge how you read your comics and I never will, and I usually don’t insist on pre-orders. But with long delays like this, pre-orders can mean a lot for the health and longevity of the book. So what can you do?
If you’re waiting on #1 and you want to make sure your local shop gets it, make sure you ask. If you’re already signed up for #1 and want to make sure you get #2, ask your shop if you can subscribe. If you like #1 when it comes out, make some noise so people can use the delay to get on board! We’re really proud of this book, and we think you’ll be eager for more when it drops.
Okay, that’s all!
As a general note: the things I recommend here are things that I enjoy. There might be content in some films/books/art I like that’s upsetting to you. I always encourage people who have content concerns to Google something before checking it out - what upsets me might not upset you, so I have to imagine the opposite is true, too. Take care of yourselves.
That being said! Last weekend I ended up stuck at home with a night to myself so I caught up on two films: Shiva Baby and Benedetta. Both got some Indie Circuit award buzz and they made a fun double feature for being messily sapphic in very different ways. Both were about complicated women and were refreshingly unconcerned with scrubbing their female characters of that complication. Good stuff, imo.
I don’t know much about musical theory but this video sure made me feel like I learned something. Start here - but all of his videos make me feel musically smarter.
Back when I was a little LARPer, some of my favorite costume pieces came from Armstreet Clothing. Their work was always durable, affordable, and rustically beautiful. Armstreet is a Ukrainian company, with offices and workshops in Kharkiv, Lviv, and other hard-hit cities. Despite this, many of them have chosen to stay and serve their communities by making sleeping bags for soldiers and warm blankets for refugees. These have got to be some of the world’s bravest, coolest people. You can help by buying materials for their cause at the link above, reading and sharing their war blog, and more. Thanks all.
Stay weird! Talk soon. Ciao~
