it's friday night, let's hang out
I'm painting my nails, dying my hair, and thinking about Free Comic Book Day.
Sorry the newsletter is late. You’re probably reading this with your Saturday morning coffee, actually. This was a truly exhausting week, for some reasons personal and others…more generally political. Certainly you understand.
Nothing this week…I think? But I wanted to get one of these out anyway, for a couple of reasons. I like you folks, even though our conversations are kind of one-sided - for now. It keeps me honest, to check in with you all. I’ve got some exciting business I’ll get to at the end, but let’s catch up.
Tomorrow, May 7th, is Free Comic Book Day. It’s a special day for the comics industry, where the publishers make special books to engage new readers, and comics shop owners order them and distribute them to anyone who walks in, for free.
Many, many of us love comics because someone handed us one, once upon a time, and Free Comic Book Day is the first time in a comic store for a lot of people. For shops it’s a festive, but exhausting day, and the books that are free to customers actually cost the shop money - so we encourage you to, if you can, support the shop by spending some money while you’re there.
That being said, Free Comic Book Day is also a day about celebrating your local shop, and the community that it can create. Many comic shops mark today with raffles, signings, costume contests, giveaways, and more. If you’re someone who has been on the fence about checking out your local comic store, make Saturday the day. Many shops are still adapting to create COVID-safe fun for everyone. The vibes are effervescent. and even if you just leave with a few free comics, you’ve checked out a new local business. Good for you! Take the rest of the day off and read those free comics (and anything else you bought.)
I’ll be signing at Arsenal Comics in Newbury, Park, CA. If you’re local, I hope you come out. It’s my first time at the shop, and I’m stoked to check it out. I’m sitting here now, halfway through my ‘night before an actual appearance’-appearance rituals, and I feel so lucky that tomorrow I get to go to a new shop, catch those vibes, and most of all - meet people that like my work. That’s the most unbelievable part.
I know things are rough right now, but we need energy to fight. And I think it’s important we find bright moments in dark spaces to fuel us forward.
Safe, accessible abortion for all.
MONDAY. 5.9.22. IT ALL BEGINS.
Hope you checked out Monday’s big announcement post.
We’ll be continuing to celebrate Free Comic Book Day on Monday, and all through the month of May, as we kick into high gear with story, comics, hangouts, special offers, and more.
I won’t say too much here, because Monday is when our festivities pop off, but you’ll want to be ready. We’ve got comics we’re so eager to share with you.
Phil and I are so excited.
Can’t put anything better than this here, this week. There’s some real magic in this song, a shot of serotonin that’s most relatable when you really need it.
Stay weird! Stay safe. Talk soon. Ciao~
