COMICSPRO for SICKOS
and the return of Marian Heretic
In case you missed the news from Comicspro, we finally got to announce SICKO, a five-issue miniseries from Ignition Press by me and the incredible Amilcar Pinna (pencils/inks), Amanda Grazini (colors), and Arianna Maher on letters.
SICKO follows Valentine Virago, a medical student who finds herself laid low by her own immune system attacking her body - a common enough chronic complaint for many. The real trouble starts when her immune system starts attacking other people.
There’s a little more about the story at the link, but I’ll let you go there to read that. Me, I’m so excited to rejoin forces with Amilcar, an artist who I first partnered with on Valiant Comics’ The Forgotten Queen. I had such a good time working with him, and I was so wowed by his work, I considered working with him again and again, but this project? This was the one.
SICKO is about more than just feeling like shit; it is about the absurd intersection between our luminous, boundless, incredible minds with our breakable, fallible, dying bodies. It’s about real Surrealism, not drippy clocks or weird dreams, but where the self is not-the-self, where the body is a permeable thing through which the beyond can manifest. Surrealism remembered as a fight against an increasingly fascist world.
I’m super proud of it, and I can’t wait for you all the see what we’ve coughed up.
WAIT GO BACK WHAT’S COMICSPRO?
To my retailer pals I met there who are new to this newsletter - hello! You already know Comicspro is as you may have just recovered from your trip.
For everyone else, Comicspro is an industry-style convention rather than a fan-facing comic con. Retailers, publishers, and creators get together out of the public eye to show off upcoming schedules, find out how best to support our retail partners, and have a few nice meals together.
We had an incredible few days here in LA, getting to announce books and hang with retailer and industry friends, and spending the evenings bonding and enjoying my favorite city.
ANY OTHER BIG NEWS?
Glad you asked. Our pals at Boom Studios posted this from their presentation over at their Bluesky account -
That’s right - Marian Heretic is coming back with a few exciting announcement soon - but here’s the biggest one for now - her next chapter will be appearing in the pages of the breakout HELLO DARKNESS anthology!
The final issue of our first arc, #5, releases March 11, and then Hello Darkness (don’t know if I can say which number yet) will have her next chapter over four issues. There’s even more Marian in the chamber but again - don’t know what I can talk about yet, so for now - praise Our Lady, MARIAN IS RETURNING!
SO WHAT DID YOU DO THIS WEEK?
I spent all day on-set yesterday, filming something really cool that’s been on my bucket list my whole life. There’s nothing I can show yet, but I can’t wait to share with y’all.
Tomorrow I’m dropping two more orders in the mail, and we’ll be all caught up on shop orders! I am down to the very last copies of Sirens: Love Hurts #1 in the store, and I just put up a few copies of Marian Heretic #4. As always, all subscribers here get 10% off with code SCORPIOROOM, and paid subscribers can find their 25% off code here.
Okay, I’m off to write a few chapters of my current projects and read some delicious research.
Stay weird, talk soon -
