What can I say? When it comes to weird magical landscapes and systems, I really like jamming with Jonathan Hickman.
…and look at the rest of that lineup!
Incredible. The visual artists alone would make this an instant buy for me.
I’d like to extend a welcome to those of you who are new here - the announcement today brought in a gaggle of new subscribers. I won’t say much more about the project now - there’s a lot coming, and part of the joy in this one is the mystery - but I was thrilled to be asked to participate. Jon’s newsletter is right in that after the last year, creative collaboration with friends really held some of us together. There’s something really magical in the chance to call each other up and jam, something that reminds me of late nights spent working on D&D homebrew rules and fanfiction structures with friends as a nerdy teenager. (More on that…at the end.)
For my part, I’ve designed a magic system for the book’s setting. Jon and I work well together: we throw information at one another, talk it out for a bit to check the vibe, and then go our separate ways to create. I’ve learned it’s useless to attempt to impress him with anything but the best and most genuine version of what I can deliver. And it’s fun. We’re nerds. You’re a nerd too, (probably.) Part of the fun of this stuff is the fiddly structure of it.
I won’t say much more. I’ll let the man with the Monotype font do that:
I’ll share a link to relevant 3W3M updates as they come out, but really the best thing you can do is sign up here.

That’s all I’ve got today, just wanted to share the good news and give a welcome to the new folks here. If you’d like to see/hear any more of my qualifications when it comes to developing magical systems, here’s a picture of me at around 17, playing a witch at a LARP. I didn’t go to my junior or senior prom, so I don’t have any prom dress photos of me.
Just this.
Stay weird. Talk soon.
