My Jeopardy episode aired April 17th! Did I win? Well, I won’t spoil it, but I went up against Good-Hearted Trivia-Monster Jamie Ding, who you may have heard about if you follow Jeopardy at all. But I had an amazing time - the peak of which was finding out Ken Jennings is a for-real Wednesday Warrior comics fan.

We all have a bucket list, right? Personally, I’ve never really felt the urge to leap out of a plane, I don’t have the tech-bro madness that drives people to climb Everest, and I don’t have the liquidity for fabulous international travel at the moment. But a drive down the highway to Burbank…that I could manage.

But it wasn’t entirely up to me. Competing on Jeopardy, as you might imagine, is on the bucket list of a lot of people. So I started where everyone starts - the Jeopardy Anytime Test. That’s a real link and it’ll work for you, too - everyone that gets onto the main show starts the same way, right there.

It took time - I had to take the test for a few years in a row before I was called to the other stages of audition, and that’s extremely common. I know people have a ton of questions about my experience on Jeopardy, and I thought the best way to address them all is to answer your questions in a video. If you have any questions, go ahead and comment them below - I’m shooting very shortly so be quick if you want them answered!

MEGACON and WONDERCON

Wonderful seeing you all there! My first Megacon was a rousing success. I got to spend time with new friends and old, and was so impressed with some of what the con set up for fans. There were some incredible photo ops from local organizations like the 501st, scavenger hunts, and even a cosplay exhibit area full of mannequins displaying some truly gorgeous work. I’m always a big fan when cons have lots of free stuff to enjoy for folks that have already paid the oft-expensive ticket prices at times like these.

Wondercon 2026 was one of the craziest cons of my life. With the con choosing to feature Babs Tarr’s incredible art from our current book Sirens: Love Hurts as the official convention art, we were pretty busy all weekend. We sold out of all of our copies of #1 by Saturday PM and had the best time with fans, friends, and cosplayers in line. Babs and I had a blast doing panels - one with DC and one with some of our favorite creator pals.

SIRENS: LOVE HURTS #4

Out May 20th (bumped a week from it’s original 5/13 but now at the printer), this is the conclusion to SIRENS: LOVE HURTS, our Black Label experiment where we put the focus on women’s friendships and relationships in Gotham City while on the trail of a horoscope-obsessed serial killer. WHERE’S MARIAN?

The MARIAN HERETIC vol 1 TPB releases on July 28th, but I am hoping we’ll have a few early at SDCC this year! SICKO follows Valentine Virago, a medical student who finds herself laid low by her own immune system attacking her body - a common enough chronic complaint for many. The real trouble starts when her immune system starts attacking other people.

There’s a little more about the story at the link, but I’ll let you go there to read that. Me, I’m so excited to rejoin forces with Amilcar, an artist who I first partnered with on Valiant Comics’ The Forgotten Queen. I had such a good time working with him, and I was so wowed by his work, I considered working with him again and again, but this project? This was the one.

SICKO is about more than just feeling like shit; it is about the absurd intersection between our luminous, boundless, incredible minds with our breakable, fallible, dying bodies. It’s about real Surrealism, not drippy clocks or weird dreams, but where the self is not-the-self, where the body is a permeable thing through which the beyond can manifest. Surrealism remembered as a fight against an increasingly fascist world.

I’m super proud of it, and I can’t wait for you all the see what we’ve coughed up.

The final issue of our first arc, #5, releases March 11, and then Hello Darkness (don’t know if I can say which number yet) will have her next chapter over four issues. There’s even more Marian in the chamber but again - don’t know what I can talk about yet, so for now - praise Our Lady, MARIAN IS RETURNING!

I spent all day on-set yesterday, filming something really cool that’s been on my bucket list my whole life. There’s nothing I can show yet, but I can’t wait to share with y’all.

and I got to team up to write a super gross, creepy love story in EC Comics’ TORTURED HEARTS, releasing this Wednesday from Oni Press.

This script was so much fun to write together, an example of the perfect co-write, where every time you pass the script back and forth, some crucial layer of it has been found. It got better with time - just like true love. ♡ And artist Arjuna Susini made our pair of romantic thrill-killers almost too hot? Let’s see what they have to teach our desperate seekers in The Spark, out this Wednesday from Oni Press, available at finer comic shops everywhere.

SIRENS: LOVE HURTS #1 GALENTINE’S RELEASE PARTY!

This week also marks the release of SIRENS: LOVE HURTS #1, the first issue of my DC Black Label book and the return of the INCREDIBLE BABS TARR to comics!

WHAT, ME MAD?

ICYMI, I’m one of the contributors to the absolutely bonkers Zdarsky-edited return of MAD Magazine in MAD About DC. I was lucky enough to pick my own artist contributor for my one-page and it wasn’t hard at all to reach out and ask Mattie Lubchansky, one of the funniest cartoonists alive.

You can read more of the list on contributors at the link, and I don’t want to spoil much, but I’ll leave you with this - after last year, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. You’ll see April 1st (yes, really) when the book comes out.

OUR LADY OF ESCALATING CONSEQUENCES

MARIAN HERETIC #4 came out last week. Pretty wild shit, things have pretty much changed irrevocably for Marian and it’s going to be pretty tough for her to make any kind of peace with the Church after this. But she’s got a goddess, her Sisters, and theoretically, a really hot witch named Ravenna on her side.

It’s true that MARIAN HERETIC #5 is the last issue currently up for solicitation. Please read between the lines of what I’m saying, and know that I’m excited for the future. I just got a look at our vol.1 collection and I’m so, so proud of it. I’m also just excited for you all too see the end of #5 - both for the story and for the cool thing we put together showcasing our fans. I love Marian so much, and I’m having a blast over here.

ONE LAST SICK LITTLE TEASER

I’ll be signing at this Ignition Press event at Golden Apple Comics, taking place during ComicsPRO. If you’re wondering why I’ll be there, I can’t tell you yet. But I’m the fourth name on this list and I can tell you that fourth image on there is drawn by Amilcar Pinna, one of my favorite artists and one I’ve worked with before. Hmm. Interesting.

It hit me that in all the Marian Heretic fanfare, I hadn’t made a dedicated post to talk about SIRENS: LOVE HURTS, and we’re already something like thirteen days from final order cutoff. It’s crazy to feel like it’s coming up so quickly, because this book didn’t come together quickly: we’ve been working on it since 2022!

That’s afforded Babs, me, and our editors Andrea and Ash so much time, glorious time. Working at the speed of a monthly comic, you don’t get a lot of chances to iterate. Ideas hit the page and then the shelves about as soon as you can think of them - even getting ahead requires some cram time, so you never really get the time to stretch out and try things over and over again.

This feels like the opposite - for so long Babs and I have been developing and spending time with these versions of these girls. We know them so well, and we can’t wait to introduce them to you. So…how did they come to be?

Well first of all, the DC Black Label experience, for me, has involved a lot of fun customization. I’ve talked before about ‘sliders’ - the gamer-brain word I use to describe the options I’m afforded at the beginning of a project. I want to know everything I can change: what is fixed about the project, pre-determined during the approval process by the Powers that Be, and what can I change? How much space do I have, what characters can I use, what part of the market am I trying to hit?

In our case, what we got approved (with the help of the legendary editor Jess Chen, who has now departed comics for the world of amazing card games) was simply the loose concept - “Sirens as Sex and the City,” a comic book for an adult audience focusing on love, relationships, and friendship - but one with a distinctly Gotham City edge. It would be drawn by Babs and written by me, and 128 pages. The rest was up to us: don’t threaten me with a good time. It’s both wonderful and daunting - what do you do with a dream artist and 128 pages?

…no pressure.

So how to not fuck it up?

I always try and capture my raw ideas at this point. Before all else, the Sirens are friends. Female friendship stories have always been important to me, and I know I’m not alone in that. I grew up on The Babysitters’ Club and Sailor Moon, stories for and by women that were full of such different and real groups of girls.

In comparison, a lot of the media I enjoyed came up really short. It felt crazy to go from these groups of different girls that were like the ones I myself knew to the other stories I liked - where there was often just one token girl. Token characters often come off false for obvious reasons: when they have to be every personality trait at once (emotional! flirty! bossy! aloof! nurturing! rebellious!) to fill any role a Token Person might fill, they came away feeling false.

In high school I got really into anime and manga, with books like NANA and MARS and Paradise Kiss showing me that sweet spot between the adult-audience media I was starting to enjoy, and the friendship-based content I’d enjoyed as a kid. I came of age (was about 16-24) during the era of Sex and the City, and while it’s not without many dated flaws and has become something of a dead horse limping these days, I maintain that it was truly transformative in its time, no less than The Sopranos. As a young woman who didn’t even realize I was learning episodic storycraft, I was learning it from Sex and the City. These women were nothing like me, and I’ve never even found their lives particularly personally aspirational1, but I was sucked in by the honest conversation between adult women who weren’t set up to hate each other, they were spending their brunches in a sort of hallowed space where they could be fully honest with one another in a way they could be nowhere else in their lives. The Seinfeld diner but with no boys, so they could talk about sex and being mad at their boyfriends and feeling shitty. I loved that.

Sirens: Love Hurts owes a big debt to Babs’ and I’s favorite 2000s manga, as mentioned, but I can’t go without mentioning one of the books that inspired me most: Tokyo Tarereba Girls. I could go on and on about this one, but I’ll start with what hooked me - it’s about three thirty year old single friends who meet up at an izakaya for snacks and romantic laments. Thirty year old single women don’t get a lot of manga protag time, knowwhatImean? If you’re champing at the bit for Sirens: Love Hurts #1 and you want something to read in the meantime, read Tokyo Tarereba Girls.

I had a gut feeling from the start that I wanted a nice, balanced four characters instead of the Sirens’ standard three. Not only did that seem more balanced narratively, it gave us an opportunity for some interesting dynamic to play out. Babs and I had already gotten some space to tell a little story about the origin of the Sirens name and party setup in Harley Quinn: Black, White and Redder. We know so much about the Sirens already, it didn’t feel like we could get a ton of tension out of threatening that dynamic, nor did I think fans wanted to see that. I wanted us to enjoy the Sirens at their height, together, when something throws them into disarray. If I wanted that standard four, that final tentpole, I needed one more Gotham girl. Of which there are many, but only one came to mind for me: Miss Dinah Lance herself, the Black Canary.

Dinah has enough of a hero pedigree to be a real threat to the Sirens’ criminal ways, while still being street smart and a Gothamite to the core. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty to do the right thing - and that’s what makes her a fascinating fourth member of our Sirens crew.

(Additional shoutouts inspiring Dinah showing up here are the super fun best friend vibes she has in Black Canary/Zatanna: Bloodspell, Jurnee Smollet’s portrayal in Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, and that wonderful DCYou era where Babs’ Batgirl and Annie Wu’s Black Canary were lighting shelves aflame at the same time.)

Once I had Dinah in mind, the rest of the details fell into place. With four Sirens, we could do four 32-page issues. Each issue isn’t about one Siren - they all appear in each one - but there’s a harmony to it furthered by the book’s structure: each issue is one season of the year. Not just any old year, but the year that kicks off with Dinah Lance’s engagement to Oliver Queen and ends with their star-studded wedding day. A year that kicks off Selina Kyle’s legendary player era - Bruce Wayne or Batman? -and a year that sets roommates Pamela Isley and Harleen Quinzel on edge and brings their friendship to the brink of….something else.

And there’s one final, frightening thing that will bring these women together - a serial killer stalking Gotham’s women, one only the Sirens can bring down. It is, after all, Gotham City. This isn’t a Metropolis book - there are killers and monsters and madmen in the shadows, and our Sirens are the last line of defense. What we end up with is a perfect DC mashup - Gotham City Sirens meets The Long Halloween.

One of the most fun parts of this whole process has been style. If you know Babs’ work you know it’s style on style and I happily leaned into that in my scripting. In each issue there are costume changes and moments I wrote in just for Babs to flex her beautiful design chops. We can’t help but work with cosplayers in mind! This is a hot girl book for hot girls2 and we want to empower people to play dress up.

Part of that was thinking of the girls as people with wardrobes rather than superheroes with costumes. So often in superhero comics the focus is the spandex and their day-to-day clothes are kind of an afterthought - not so here. While Babs was working on her prior projects, I had some time to plot and plan, so I did what I usually do when I want to curate visuals for a collaborator - I turned to Pinterest.

The boards seen within this post represent some of the earliest visual work on the book, absolute dust from which Babs Tarr has spun some of the most beautiful, funny, and heartfelt comics pages I have ever read.

Marian Heretic #3 is out New Year’s Eve, 12/31. There’s a page in this issue that was part of the original pitch, I love it so much. But it is the end of December, time for retrospectives, and that’s what I’m here for. A truly wild year for Marian and I, far beyond my expectations, and it would be a disservice to not collect those memories in some form, so here we go.

I can’t tell you what city I was in when someone finally asked: “how did you organize your Heretic tour?”

I’d been shilling the idea of the Heretic tour for months. Back in 2024 when I was planning my next year, I wanted to travel to as many conventions as possible to promote Marian Heretic. I realized that in a bit of con-season kismet, the book was announced at San Diego Comic Con 2025, and released the week of New York Comic Con 2025. I asked my amazing convention agent Kat Fox to send me some convention offers, and I said yes to a bunch of them. I like traveling! I like doing shows.

At some point the idea of the tour started brewing, and I thought ‘let me look at all of the conventions I’ve said yes to, and I’ll see what other dates I can add.’ It wasn’t long before I realized, eh-heh, I’d booked a ton of shows already. Anything else and I’d be back-to-back-to-back, something that seemed a bit daunting to my tender, extensively well-medicated brain. I can be a bit of an orchid. Too long spent outside of my homeostasis (9 hours of sleep, 9 hours of silence, 9 shots of espresso each day) and I begin to wilt, to grow weird, to rot in my own musty humidity.

I realized I’d booked myself - perhaps overbooked myself - but I’d be damned if I was going to let it overwhelm me. 8+ conventions in 4 months? Sounds like you’re on the road, rockstar. Sounds like a tour. So I began looking for public domain paintings of nuns, and got to work.

So to answer the question of the young lady in the Forgotten City - I did it to myself, I asked no permission, and no one stopped me.

I’d do it again. Let’s take a look back together with tons of photos and a bonus round of the best thing I ate in every city.

GALAXYCON NEW ORLEANS (NEW ORLEANS, LA)

The tour’s first stop was still a bit of a mystery. I realized I couldn’t yet announce my book, but I could announce my schedule. Heretic’s just….a word! A word I like. And a nun. Everyone knows I like nuns!

I’d always wanted to go to New Orleans, so this was an instant add to my schedule. One of the nicest places I’ve been to, I made a whole post about it to announce the tour. Back when I had enough energy. I really wanted to make posts like this for each city but I didn’t! So here I am now.

NYCC 2025

And the official last stop of the HERETIC TOUR. What a great time, and I’ll try and post a larger reflection on the tour soon. NYCC was, however, in true Final Night sense, the biggest and best show of the tour.

First of all, we had the release of the distributor-level sold out Marian Heretic #1, which was a blast.

At the convention, the folks at Boom! put together various extremely cool stickers and giveaways, gorgeous booth art, and several signings alongside my dear friend and fellow writer , who was releasing her incredible new book, Mary Sue.

SIRENS: LOVE HURTS

I’m BACK IN GOTHAM, BABES (with BABS!) SIRENS: LOVE HURTS comes out FEBRUARY 2026!

Well, if I’m being honest, I never left. This project started up as my runs on Catwoman and Harley Quinn were winding down, and it felt like the perfect sidestep. Babs Tarr is one of the modern greats, and we’ve become the most gruesome of Scorpio Twosomes working on this book together.

I’ve been loosely calling it ‘Sex and the City meets The Long Halloween,’ which isn’t really a joke: four issues, each one season, while the Gotham City Sirens (+ Gotham girl Black Canary) team up over one year to take out a serial killer that’s targeting Gotham’s women.

I can’t tell you all enough how happy I am about this book being announced, and how proud of it we all are. There will be lots more to come about this book, and I’ll make a longer post about it for those of you who are curious - feel free to ask me questions below! Remember: this is a Black Label book, which means it is 1) meant for adult readers and 2) out of main DCU continuity. We’re able to play with the timestream a bit in a really fun way - god I love Black Label.

Not only does Wednesday mark the release of Marian Heretic, one of Friday’s panels will mark the announcement of another book I’ve been working on for years, one I am so, so ready to not have to keep quiet anymore. You’ll get it when you see it.

We sold out at the distributor level nearly a week before release! That’s an incredible feeling, made even more incredible by the fact that Marian’s a brand new character. You all are already so excited for her, and I’m certain she won’t disappoint.

If you’re going to NYCC, here’s where you can catch me. I’ll have an Artist Alley table at I40 with books you can buy and my schedule posted, but I won’t be there too much on Thursday or Friday. You can catch me at the DC or Boom! booths those days:

I am going to be going all day every day between these engagements, so if you see me and I appear to be running between two back to back interviews-meetings-dinners-signings-appearances, it’s because I am. I bought new sneakers for this. This is what we train for.

This weekend, Revenge Of Comics and Pinball and Boom! partnered to have an early release party. We had a few early Marian #1s to sign and sell, and it’s never a bad time there. I met fans, talked about the book, played a lil pinball, and had an excellent Americano and some kickass pastries next door at And Destroy, their sister shop with incredible coffee, food, vibes, and tables for cards, D&D, or just reading your purchases from next door. It’s a genuine third space with an incredibly cheap barrier for entry, (a cup of coffee, a comic, or a few games of pinball are more than enough to justify the hangout time,) and that’s something we need a lot more of nowadays.

One of the highlights was talking to , one of my favorite voices in comics right now. She was kind enough to shoot a video with me at the shop on Saturday, and you can check it out on Instagram, here!

On to the catch-up. Last year, when I returned home from Dragoncon I wrote a thoughtful reflection on whether or not I’m getting too old for this. This year, I came away with similar feelings, and admittedly, with age, the exhaustion does set in. I truly do not have the energy to go all night like I did at my first Dragoncon, twenty years ago.

But there’s a kind of creative energy in the air at Dragoncon that isn’t like anywhere else. People bring the most obscure costumes, trinkets, and bits of performance art you can imagine, all fueled by pure love. If you ever needed a reminder to not wait for permission and just go for it regarding your creative urges, Dragoncon will do that. The maker part of me wakes back up with a vengeance.

Maybe it’s all the Marian Heretic promotion, or the stuff I’ve been working on for my upcoming Ignition Press book, or one of the other things I’m writing (I’ve been very busy behind the scenes, over here), but I needed another kind of creativity binge.

One of my favorite things I’ve done in the past year is make time and room for my crafting urges. I took a lot of time this week in between emails and deadlines to finish projects, start new hobbies, and tackle some ‘I could make that’ urges.

There’s a certain cleverness that I feel when I get crafty. When I turn a ball of yarn I thrifted into a hat (like this one, that ended up child size) or an old bedsheet into a flowy, tiered peasant skirt (like the one below)

I’d been looking for a skirt like this for months, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of “you have the perfect black bedsheets and a sewing machine” every time I browsed the stores. Being as tall as I am, the perfect length of skirt can be hard to find, so all in all, for zero dollars over two days, I made the skirt of my dreams.

Here she is prior to hemming, but trust - that hem is crisp.

After years of admiring linocut prints and printers, I dropped about fifteen bucks total on supplies and threw myself headfirst into giving it a try. I’ve been carving out lots of things, but mostly related to Our Lady the Heretic, who is always on my mind.

All of which …which inspired me to pick up some white fabric ink and start printing on some scrap fabric. I don’t have much of this, but I thought it might make a good Kindle cover? It was supposed to just be a test print, but I kind of love it. That’s the glory of just jumping in and making stuff - sometimes you make something you love.

(Ignore the cat hair, we were just jumping in and giving it a try, I said ignore the cat hair.)

While I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into Marian Heretic, I’ve been pouring the weirdest, sickest part of my mind and guts into my book from Ignition Press. I can’t say much about it yet, but I’m collaborating with an artist I’ve worked with before, and we’re having a blast. Having their completely unique style on a creator-owned book has been so fulfilling, and I can’t wait for you to see more.

Lastly, I wasn’t at Rose City Comic Con this weekend, but if you were, you may have seen some amazing Sisters spreading the good word of Marian Heretic.

A FEW GOOD INTERVIEWS

I had two separate conversations this week with the guys at AIPT Comics. In the first, I walked my old stomping grounds of X-MEN MONDAY, returning, as madwomen like me always do, to the scene of the crime.

In all seriousness, it was a delight to talk to Chris Hassan once more, and to discuss how I’m using my Captain Britain muscles in Marian Heretic.

MARIAN HERETIC

My first creator-owned series since 2018’s Euthanauts, and the result of a question I asked myself: What book, if I saw it on the shelf at the comic store, would I not be able to resist? It’s said all you can do is make art for people like you, so what if I just leaned into all my impulses to make a book that fed my soul?

That’s Marian Heretic. A woman who suffers a crisis of faith, surrounded on all sides by her sisters, her enemies, and the witches who reach across the divide to promise her something more…

From artist Joe Jaro’s first sketch of our lead, Sister Marian, (maybe we’ll share that here later…) I knew that he was the right artist for her, and made my desires known. Our original editor, the incredible Jon Moisan, saw the vision and guided us masterfully for the rest of his time at Boom! Studios. Colorist Walter Baiamonte brings an incredible combo of stained glass brightness and deep dark shadow, exactly what I’d hoped for. Our letterer is certified goth cred holder Jim Campbell (who did the letters for our Vampire: The Masquerade series), and our really fucking cool logo designed by North Carolina’s Finest Designer, Rico Renzi.

We have amazing variants lined up, like the above one from Dylan Burnett, and one I'm posting for the first time (but was revealed at the SDCC panel) by the amazing Suspiria Vilchez.

And then there’s the other kind, the kind that keep me up at night with a fevered compulsion, much like Megalopolis did. When the petri dish should have been tossed in the incinerator, but someone loved it enough to keep sneaking into the lab at night and feeding it money, instead.

And isn’t the point of art to disturb the comfortable, comfort the disturbed? Consider me disturbed. And the following three thousand words about a movie I absolutely did not like?

Consider that comfort.

So, Argylle. A spy movie where the central premise is that the main character is an author who writes spy novels so realistic, they attract the attention of an Evil Spy Ring. (More on that later.) It had a lot of controversy when it came out, regarding a sort of botched marketing campaign that attempted to defictionalize its female lead, the author Elly Conway. When the defictionalization went poorly (because Google) the marketing team coyly allowed a rumor to float to the top of the internet - that the book/movie project involved Taylor Swift as its ghost writer. This was permitted to promulgate unchecked until Reasonable Adult Bryce Dallas Howard said, and I quote, “We can’t pretend she was involved” on an episode of the Graham Norton Show.1

Despite the memetic dust-up created by the film’s messy marketing, it came and went with little fanfare. It mathematically bombed, and no one talked about it. In fact, when my friend Ryan suggested watching it, my reaction was something like “The fake Taylor Swift movie?” Director Matthew Vaughn was quoted as “genuinely scratching (his) head” with regard to what he called “harsh” reviews. "It’s a fun, feel-good movie,” said Vaughn.

“…or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie.”

I bet he genuinely did.

THE HERETIC TOUR 2025

Seven cities, four months. Good lord, Tini, why? You’ll see why in two weeks. I’ve got stuff coming out I want to get in every one of your little hands, and getting in various faces is one of the best ways I can do that.

Huge thanks to those of you who request my presence at your local cons! I love seeing new cities, and convention travel is a great way to do that.

This weekend’s “first stop” was at Galaxycon New Orleans and it was awesome.

As a lifelong goth girl, Anne Rice stan, and aspiring vampire bait, this was a city I’ve always wanted to see. The coolest people, most delicious food, and a convention full of good vibes. I came away with a few more souvenirs than I usually do, but what can I say - New Orleans gets me.

If you have a Galaxycon coming to a city near you, I can’t recommend them enough - and we have a great time on both sides of the table.

NEW YORK COMIC CON 2025

I’ll be a guest at this year’s New York Comic Con as a guest right up there with my same-font-sized peers, George R. R. Martin and Greg Capullo.

In all seriousness, I’m honored and extremely stoked to be there this year! It’s going to be a huge NYCC for me: we’ll be announcing a project I’ve been working on for three years, and releasing one I’ve been working on for two. One that you’ll hear all about at this year’s San Diego Comic Con in less than a month…

I, unfortunately, won’t be there. That weekend, July 24-27th, we’ll be in Raleigh, NC for Galaxycon Raleigh! But we’ve got plans locked and loaded for a bicoastal announcement spectacular: my first creator-owned comic since 2018. If you can’t make it to San Diego this year, worry not - Galaxycon has become one of my favorite organizations when it comes to putting on a great show. Come to Raleigh and lets keep the party going!

I’ll also be at Galaxycon New Orleans on July 11-13th. My first trip ever to the Big Easy, I’m so excited to eat local cuisine, haunt graveyards, sign comics, and hang with my vampire brethren (by which I obviously mean .)

Addendum: I would like to personally say that I had nothing to do with making Bryce Dallas Howard’s name smaller than mine. I would never do that. BDH is a multi-hyphenate director-actress-model with creamy skin and a lovely countenance and her name should be way bigger than mine. She’s SO pretty. Thank you.

SUPER-VISIBLE

This week marked the release of Super Visible: The Story of the Women of Marvel Comics by the amazing team of Margaret Stohl, Jeanine Schafer, and Judy Stephens. I was so honored to get to contribute to this book with some photos, thoughts, and memories, and even more honored to get to celebrate it in Los Angeles with the authors and friends (and delicious cake, seen below with my Krakoan brother .)

While it wasn’t a surprise to see my name in the book, it’s always a nice time to open a copy right to a page of another comic creator saying nice things about me. It’s one of my favorite things about this industry - the way we gas each other up. So much of the book is made up of women talking about our histories in comics, the known and the unknown facts, and an important thing to remember is that we often aren’t alone. Even if only one of us gets the credit, it’s the other women we’re friends with behind the scenes who often keep us sane. Since this whole book is the history of the women of Marvel by three of those women, it’s the best version of a primary source we have for a history that could have easily gotten erased. I’m very grateful.

IRONHEART???

Well this is interesting:

Which is okay by me - the rest of the show comes out tomorrow at the time of this writing, so I’ll re-up my D+ and give it a watch. My most off-the-wall thought of what it could be? Maybe Bei the Blood Moon. Where does she fit in with Riri? IDK. I like girls in cool armor, though, and they both have that.

Inspired by (spoilers for THE VVITCH) the Devil’s own unique form, a huge black goat with a terrible attitude. But he’s always been nice to me…

Made from reclaimed black yarn (thanks again to Remainders in Pasadena!, CA) and a pack of cross charms, over a month or so with a lot of ‘trust the process’ involved. I kept begging Casey for guidance and she insisted I find my own way, which is part of what made this such a pleasure to make.

Earlier examples of my fiber art were done purely by feel, in a vacuum, for no one but myself. Sure, I’ve made hats, blankets, bags - gifts for loved ones that were made for utility with aesthetic in mind. Handmade garments, and nice ones, but not art.

The importance of having friends who understand your art is that they don’t let their preference get in the way when they encourage you. The gift of making this piece for another person was that it encouraged in me a sense of refinement- at just the right time.

If my first fiber art project was about feeling out the space and seeing if it was possible, my second was about excess, all of the over-the-top impulses I had with the first attempt but reigned in. (Which thematically, worked out quite nicely, which says something for the power of creative intuition. I didn’t know I was doing that when I was doing it.)

Which means making this third piece for a dear friend with the guidance to simply ‘do what you would do,’ encouraged me in new ways. With this hat going to another person, I wanted it to speak for me when I might not be present, I wanted it to stand on its own merit. I wanted it to feel refined.

Trust the process! We’re always telling stories to ourselves, about ourselves, with everything we make. Flaky but it’s true! Unfortunately the world is full of wonder!!!

MOMOCON REPORT

This year’s Momocon was its 20th anniversary, and as great a time as I always remember. I got to see some of my favorite comics people, meet so many lovely fans, and I even snuck down to the arcade after hours to play Beatmania, Guitar Hero, and Fester’s Quest???

I am lucky enough to live in a lovely neighborhood with gorgeous landscaping. Roses, lilacs, jasmine, banana plants, birds of paradise, large white moonflowers, and more greet me on my daily walks. These don’t grow themselves - they’re the result of the hard work of landscapers who put a lot of effort into trimming hedges, clipping branches, and more.

In between their Wednesday chainsaw sessions, things pop up. Weeds, mostly. It is Southern California after all, and the sun can make things stretch up overnight. That’s how the milkweed gets there so fast.

If you aren’t aware, milkweed is a wild, native plant with dozens of varieties that grow almost all over North America. It is also the sole food source of Monarch butterflies. Like many animals with only one food source, removal of that food source can have catastrophic effects on their breeding. Not to mention what it can do to have the clutch of eggs you worked hard to lay mashed into pulp by gardeners who are just doing their job.

As you can see for yourself, this was not a small caterpillar.

He was big and fat, wandering away from his milkweed looking for a spot to pupate. I put him back on the milkweed and came back later to see him in J-hang, a pose adopted by those caterpillars ready to undergo their transformation into the iconic monarch butterfly. But when I came back again to check on him, he still hadn’t made the change. I was worried about his future in a weed-whacker-rich environment, so after some debate, I brought him to my balcony on a couple of long milkweed branches in a pitcher of water. That way he remained outside, far away from cats and air conditioning, but safely removed from what could, if the gardeners come by to weedwhack, become Hellraiser for Caterpillars.

For a few stressful days I brought him piles of fresh milkweed leaves, until finally finding him in the fabled J-hang at the top of my balcony ceiling. All I could do now is wait.

I’ve been doing a lot of waiting, myself.

Poor caterpillars. Seems like they can hardly pupate without some sapient human loser making a metaphor out of it.

But as art is finalized on a few Issue #1s and convention season ramps up, I realize that soon, I too have to emerge. I have to show my hand and my work and my guts with new stuff, stuff that feels like an evolution of everything I’ve done before, and hope people can recognize the Very Prolific Caterpillar in the monarch who emerges.

Eww I hate myself for that line, ewwww, we’re leaving it in, we’re embracing vulnerability but ewwww.

Fun fact for the X-Men nerds: I love monarchs. Jamie Braddock’s mutant name, “Monarch,” was my humble suggestion, as a nod to both his butterfly-themed sister/the Braddocks’ fae ancestry, and his role as a Mad King.

Oh, if you’re looking for the back half of the story, the metaphorical victory where I watch the butterfly emerge on my balcony and revel in the results of my choice to be patient and notice details and care for something small - it didn’t happen. I went out there one morning and there was a an empty chrysalis on the ceiling - it’s still there. He must have emerged and dried his wings in the very early morning, flexing fluids into the newborn cells in the morning’s first rays of sun. I like to think he stayed as long as he could stand waiting for me to wake up and meet him before the itch to take flight became too great, and off he went into the bright morning as a brand new bug.

Or maybe a bird ate him.

Or maybe he’s one of the many monarchs I see outside of my balcony, fluttering around the milkweed and laying eggs. Maybe he’s out there, aware that I can’t know which one he is, and I hope he realizes that that’s the funniest possible outcome. Out of all the metaphors I was looking for about change, growth, what-the-fuck-ever, he said “no ma’am. You get the only story that matters: being comfortable with not knowing the outcome.”

This week, I’ll be at MomoCon in Atlanta. It’s a great con that’s grown massively from its humble anime convention roots, and I’m always happy when I can attend as a guest. I’ll be signing comics, doing some panels about wrestling, X-Men, and witchery, and even helping out a local improv troupe. It’ll be a great time. Come see me!

Many folks here are also fans of , and I’m among you. Which is why this week is so exciting - it’s the release of his first solo writing credit in comics - Archie is Mr. Justice #4. It’s such a good story, a perfect capstone to a really cool superhero world that’s handled in a brilliant way. “Archie meets All-Star Superman” is the short pitch, go check it out from your local shop tomorrow!

With that said, I’m getting on the road soon so here are some things I’ve been enjoying in a quick list: The Rehearsal, Skeleton Crew, episodes of Criminal, Earthlings by Sayaka Murata (with the largest of content warnings,) doing my own nails, events at Revenge Of in Los Angeles, Exquisite Corpses, Allie X’s Cape God (which I saw performed live just the other night), I’ve got The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica ready to read on the plane tomorrow - I can’t wait!

I mean, we all like free stuff, but Free Comic Book Day is about more than just stuffing your bag with free floppies. For shops that participate, FCBD is like a cross between Black Friday and a Block Party, with giveaways, sales, special guests, cosplayers, and more.

The first Saturday in May, this year it falls on Saturday, May 3rd. Not every store participates, but if there’s a shop you’ve been wanting to check out for the first time, there’s no better day than Free Comic Book Day. Click the link here to find a participating shop near you!

I have so many fond memories of FCBD - some of my first adult trips to a comic shop were on FCBD, and I spent several years in comics retail. FCBD was always a special day where we were on our feet from dawn to dusk and exhausted at the end of it. It was a marathon done for the love of the game, and for one of our biggest sales days of the year. Which is to say - the comics are not free for retailers, and they rely on the big sales numbers of FCBD to buoy them after the slow winter season. It’s a good time to support a local business.

Now, I get to attend FCBD events as a creator, which feels really special. I often spend the day signing books and talking to kids and adults who are picking out their very first comic. I often find myself going into retail mode where I’m dying to give a recommendation that lands and I forget that I’m supposed to be there promoting myself.

As a kid who didn’t feel welcome in most comic book shops, an event like this would have changed my life. I’ve been to FCBD celebrations with food trucks, face painters, moon bounces, raffles, cupcakes, and Batman. If you’re a parent or babysitter looking for cheap fun to be had with a handful of small kids, look into this year’s festivities near you.

THIS IS ALL VERY SWEET, BUT ARE THERE ACTUALLY FREE COMIC BOOKS, OR-

Yes! Sorry, of course there are. Instead of just picking a free back issue or whatever, publishers make a special FCBD giveaway comic that is typically meant to promote their upcoming offerings. In the past, I’ve been part of the Free Comic Book Day offering from Oni Press, DC, and more. It’s always kind of a fun honor, knowing that a lot of your audience might be people who typically don’t read comics and picked this up because it was free. This year, I was asked by the lovely David Mariotte at Boom! if I wanted to do a story for FCBD under the banner of HELLO DARKNESS, their incredible ongoing horror anthology, and of course I said yes.

Prepare for a Hollywood-flavored bad dream in AFTERS, by me and Chloe Brailsford.

Chloe’s a fantastic independent artist who I’ve wanted to work with for some time, and her work never fails to give a gritty, cinematic vibe I thought would be perfect here. Luckily, David agreed, and with some lettering help by Jodie Troutman, we put together a short 5-page horror delight. Chloe and I had fun combining sexy girls and truly surreal horror, and you can read it on May 3rd.

I don’t actually know yet! I just remembered last week that I had this coming out and that I could and should tell you all about it. This is what a few months away from regular releases does to a person. If you’re reading this and you work at a shop and you want me to come sign there, let’s talk! WELCOME TO THE WRONG GALAXY

I was so delighted recently when deranged comedienne and fellow Rick & Morty scribe Grace Freud invited me to read at Wrong Galaxy, her monthly speculative fiction reading event. Hosted at Stories Books and Cafe in Los Angeles, I felt from the second I arrived that this place was terribly too cool for me.

But honestly, once the show started, I was enjoying myself too much to be nervous. Grace hosted as the brilliant Gestalt Penumbra, making a bunch of jokes that were side-splittingly funny if you, like me, really like jokes about mid-century science fiction writers.

All of the extremely talented and proven writers brought stories that were funny, clever, cynical, and modern. Thankfully Grace is putting together a zine containing some of the readings, which I’ll link here when available - I truly can’t wait to get a chance to re-read some of these stories.

I went up last and read a section of DOGSIDE, which paid subscribers here will be familiar with, and I felt a really nice and warm reception from the crowd and other readers. I soaked in the nice vibe for precisely 30 seconds before disappearing into the night. But I can’t lie - I might be a little addicted. I ended March with a trip back east to Galaxycon Richmond. I love Galaxycon - it’s always full of great guests, I get to be on interesting panels with cool people, and they make me feel so welcome and comfortable. Not all conventions do that, and Galaxy goes above and beyond. Galaxycon folks, if any of you are reading this, A+. Readers, if you’re living near a Galaxycon and wondering if you should check it out or not, I highly recommend it. I’ll be doing a few more this year.

Richmond, Virginia is within spitting distance of my home stomping grounds. I’m from up north, the suburbs of Washington, D.C, but it’s close enough that I feel like I’m coming home. Friends from my comics days met and mingled with friends I’ve had for a decade or more, and everyone got along. I made new friends, including my niece who I hadn’t seen since she was snugly wombside, still one month away from making her official appearance. I helped Big Poppa Pump with the Nespresso machine and got to shake hands with Weird Al and tell him how much I liked his recent performance at the LA fire benefit concert.

I mused a few times that it felt like a dream, that odd kind of coincidence and luck and kindness that feels almost surreal. “I was signing my name on books I wrote for people who were happy to see me. My mom was there, so were some of my co-workers, and some of my friends I’ve known since high school. Then I saw Martin Sheen at the coffeemaker.”

I love convention season.

So, KRAKOA in MARVEL RIVALS.

Oh my god.

I was completely geeked when a fan sent me the key art for the Krakoa season and Hellfire Gala event in Marvel Rivals. As a Rivals fan, I was totally eager to play the map, unlock the cosmetics, and see the mutant island I love so much. But when that same fan pointed out Amazing Baby sitting on Rocket’s shoulders, I was sure it couldn’t get better.

Leah Williams and I collaborated on the existence of Amazing Baby in our scripts, and David Baldeon and Marcus To brought him to life in the pages of X-Factor and Excalibur respectively. Over time he became a fun little place to pinpoint where the relationship between Rachel and Betsy really started kindling - we gave them a dog together, what is more sapphic than that?

So that was exciting, but the other day, my first morning waking up in my own bed in over a week, I had a dozen notifications. Shogo Dragon from Excalibur in Rivals!

I’m so excited. Such a nice shoutout to Excalibur from the devs of the coolest game in the world right now. In addition to Shogo, I’m pretty sure I spotted Apocalypse’s lab in the map - I cannot wait to see if I can find his Grimoire! I just hope you respawn at Arbor Magna. Now I guess I have to get good with a mutant character, huh.

I’m thinking of maybe doing a Twitch stream when the map drops to chat with folks and look for Easter Eggs on the map - a sort of Krakoan Easter Egg Hunt just in time for Easter. Would folks be into that? Comment below and let me know. Just know that I’m buying a rename token as soon as it’s over so none of you know my username and come harass me. Rivals time is my off time.

A companion piece to The Sacrificial Lamb, the Golden Calf is an idol of wealth worship, a false god, an immortal lord greedy for blood money. These are therapeutic pieces to make in a time where it feels like accountability is rare and greed is abundant. It's also fun to take things apart and link them together. The coins are from my travels.
